The Royal Opera is a company based in central London, resident at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Along with the English National Opera, it is one of the two principal opera companies in London. Founded in 1946 as the Covent Garden Opera Company, it was known by that title until 1968. It brought a long annual season and consistent management to a house that had previously hosted short seasons under a series of impresarios. Since its inception, it has shared the Royal Opera House with the dance company now known as The Royal Ballet.

Hilding Rosenberg - The Isle of Bliss (Jarvi)
Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 2 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 580 Mb
Label:PhonoSuecia - Date:2002

Rosenberg's musical language in this dreamplay of reaching out for the unattainable is tugged between the poles of Sibelian cool and warm Gallic impressionism. As an opera this is not another Pelléas. It is far too mercurial and word-responsive for that. If anything it has subject connections with other operas: Korngold’s Die Kathrin (CPO) and Schreker’s Die Ferne Klang (Naxos and Capriccio). It occupies a surreal littoral between Puccinian verismo and modernistic objectivity; neither one nor the other......Most warmly recommended.

Bizet - Carmen (Antonio Pappano, Anna Caterina Antonacci, Jonas Kaufmann) [2008]

This Covent Garden production of Bizet’s Carmen, makes a vivid musical and dramatic impression. Director Francesca Zambello creates a properly Spanish atmosphere, filling the stage with a profusion of detailed characters. In Act One’s town square each of the many soldiers, strollers, cigarette factory girls, and children are individuals, so there’s a bustle of continuous, realistic activity. That attention to detail carries over to the rest of the opera, involving viewers in the action. Tanya McCallin’s sets are a perfect foil for the direction: simple, movable panels that serve as lightly sketched backdrops for the town square, a tavern, the smugglers’ mountain hideaway, and the final scene in front of the bull ring. But what makes this Carmen special is the singing and acting of the principals... --Dan Davis

Simone Kermes - Bel Canto (2013)
Classical, Opera | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 01:01:24 | 145 MB
Label: Sony Music | Tracks: 12 | Rls.date: 2013

With this album Simone Kermes presents her dedication to bel canto. Despite the title the Baroque soprano hasn’t suddenly switched from one voice type to another but is simply following her own interpretation of this term, arguing that bel canto is “inconceivable without reference to the Baroque tradition”. The album centres around famous arias of the belcanto soprano repertoire: “Casta Diva“ from Bellini’s Norma, “O luce di quest’ anima“ from Donizetti’s Linda di Chamounix and “Dolce pensiero“ from Rossini’s Semiramide.

First seen at Washington National Opera, where Fleming shared the role with Sondra Radvanovsky [for my review, see The Donizetti Revival, Second Stage: Radvanovsky, Grigolo in Pascoe’s WNO “Lucrezia Borgia” – November 17, 2008], Pascoe’s production adds credibility to the opera’s storyline by positing that Lucrezia’s son Gennaro (stunningly sung by Michael Fabiano in his San Francisco Opera debut) and his sidekick Maffio Orsini are lovers...

". . . [there are numerous times] when subtlety and beauty of his vocal effects take the breath away: the dazzling light and rapid fade, for instance, during the syllables of the word "lumière" [in act one] . . . Sophie Koch puts her best tonsils forward singing the agonized Charlotte of act three, while Eri Nakamura is suitably bubbly [as Sophie] . . . Villazón's ardour finds its match in Antonio Pappano's conducting. He never shrinks from the luscious ache in Massenet's music or its dramatic bustle. Nocturnal sighs; bucolic whooping; dark melodramatics: the Royal Opera House orchestra takes care of them all." ~The Times

Andrea Bocelli has been called "the fourth tenor"; the blind, Tuscan-born vocalist has emerged as one of the most popular voices in the arena of light classical and crossover vocals and has made inroads into the world of opera as well. His participation in Pavarotti's 1992 hit Miserere album and Zucchero Fornaciari's 1993 world tour brought him international attention. Bocelli has been most successful as a pop ballad singer, having recorded duets with Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, and Eros Ramazzotti.

This new production of Bellini’s Norma by Jürgen Rose (sets, costumes, stage direction, and lighting) to honor Edita Gruberova’s first staged assumption of the title role was taped in January and February of 2006 in Munich. It does neither the opera nor the soprano any favors. In most ways, it’s a pretty gloomy affair. The sets are minimal angular wood constructions comprised of a step or two here and there and a not-very-high platform or two that the players can climb up and down. Everything is dark. The costumes are modern but only can be defined as such because they evoke no particular era; Norma’s rich blue outfit for the first scene, complete with scarf/hood that effectively covers everything but her apple-shaped face and hands, allows for little expressivity.

Glass: Galileo Galilei - Manson, Portland Opera (2014)
EAC Rip | Flac (Image + cue + log) | 2 CDs | Full Scans | 465 MB
Genre: Classical | Label: Orange Mountain | Catalog Number: 91

Orange Mountain Music is proud to present the world premiere recording of Philip Glass’ opera Galileo Galilei. The opera draws from letters of Galileo and his family, along with various other documents, to retrospectively journey through Galileo’s life. It opens with him as an old, blind man after the inquisition for his heresy and explores his religiosity as well as his break with the church and expands into the greater oscillating relationship of science to both religion and art. It reaches its end with Galileo, as a young boy, watching an opera composed by his father.
