French composer Pascal Dusapin´s based "Faustus, the last night" loosely on Marlowe´s "Doktor Faustus" (as opposed to Goethe´s, as Dusapin emphasized), but with a myriad of other influences, such as Dante, Samuel Beckett etc.
This is an opera of philosophical ideas. A conversational piece between Faustus and Méphistophéles taking place on Faust´s last night passing from the living to the damned. Several characters are added such as as Sly, from "The taming of the Shrew" (Dusapin: My favourite Shakespearean character), a terrified Angel and Togod (to God). Faustus is megalomaniac and asks all sorts of questions. Méphistophéles does not want to answer in a discussion centered around the creation of the world and the nature of ideas where Dusapin´s self-confessed sympathy lies with Méphistopheles.
There is no linear plot in this 1,5 hour very intellectual piece, but Pascal Dusapin´s music is rather powerful, dark and relatively rich-textured. This opera is one of the musically most interesting newly composed opera within the last decade together with the operas of Kaija Saariaho.

A great post! Too bad I can't figure out how to display the subtitles with Movist (a Mac program), because the beloved VLC player (who has those subs available) totally freezes with this .mkv file...

But really interesting music, and Peter Mussbach is just a freakin' genius (met him once and was totally overwhelmed by his personality)...

Cheers

Too bad, FreddieCouples... but I don't understand why your VLC isn't working right!
Do you have an up-to-date version? At the moment, it's 1.1.1 version. I'm on Mac too and it works perfectly.
Maybe - in 2nd step - a CPU problem? Try restarting your Mac and only launching VLC.

Hi there !
The mkv file works perfectly for me in VLC 1.0.3 on a recent mac.
Thank you very much for this post Wolfy, I wanted to see it since a few time.
Did you rip it yourself? If that's the case, would you
accept to rip also the bonus interviews of the dvd? (on a separate link if possible?)
Thanks in advance.
All the best
J.

Many thanks. At the same time, wolfy13, if this is your own rip, I can't help hoping that you might consent to uploading the full uncompressed DVD. Any chance?
