Jimmy Smith: Funk In The Keys - Live At The Florida Keys `99 (2005)
Video: PAL, MPEG-2 at 7 472 Kbps, 720 x 576 at 25.000 fps | Audio: AC-3 6ch. at 448 Kbps, AC-3 2ch. at 224 Kbps, DTS 6ch. at 755 Kbps
Genre: Jazz | Label: Alpha Centauri Ent. | Copy: Untouched | Release Date: 7 July 2005 | Runtime: 42 min. | 2,77 GB (DVD5)

Jimmy Smith wasn't the first organ player in jazz, but no one had a greater influence with the instrument than he did; Smith coaxed a rich, grooving tone from the Hammond B-3, and his sound and style made him a top instrumentalist in the 1950s and '60s, while a number of rock and R&B keyboardists would learn valuable lessons from Smith's example. James Oscar Smith was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania on December 8, 1928 (some sources cite his birth year as 1925). Smith's father was a musician and entertainer, and young Jimmy joined his song-and-dance act when he was six years old.

Adam Holzman & Brave New World - The Big Picture (1997)
Jazz, Jazz Fusion | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 57 min | 131 MB
Label: Escapade Music | Rel: 1997

Holzman manned the keyboards in the late 80s Miles Davis Band. By '85, he became musical director for the band. The music is a punchy fusion. Electronic musicians sample jazz grooves, now here is a jazz band that introduced some of their tracks with ear-catching samples. It is a rhythm intensive effort with a clouded demeanor. An exciting album, having avoided any jazz fusion cliches. It could be considered rock where sax takes over guitar duties.

Genre: Jazz, Swing, Gypsy Jazz, Vocal Jazz | Label: Sam Sam Music

Shine, the title of this second album of Hot Club De Frank says it all. With a mixture of swing, musette and variety this young Amsterdam Quintet creates a very romantic atmosphere with a wink to the 1930's. The dreamy voice of leadsinger Frank Meester, the tuneful guitar solo's of Harold Berghuis, the stir up improvisations of saxophonist and clarinettist Wim Lammen combined together with the chorus of the other group members make this album very special.

Throughout the 1970s, Chuck Mangione was a celebrity. His purposely lightweight music was melodic pop that was upbeat, optimistic, and sometimes uplifting. Mangione's records were big sellers yet few of his fans from the era knew that his original goal was to be a bebopper. His father had often taken Chuck and his older brother Gap (a keyboardist) out to see jazz concerts, and Dizzy Gillespie was a family friend.

Rock / Experimental Rock

This 1996 CD compilation was the first one put out privately by the Zappa family following Frank Zappa's death in 1993 from prostate cancer. The music includes three new versions of familiar Zappa works, followed bytheir better-known counterparts that have previously appeared on both LPs and CDs. As Dweezil Zappa explains in his liner notes, this previously unreleased excerpt from "Black Napkins" is not yet fully formed; oddly enough, like the version that follows from Zoot Allures, the Napoleon Murphy Brock sax solo has been edited out. The new version of the next instrumental, "Zoot Allures," fares better in comparison to the well-known take from the Zoot Allures CD, in spite of some distortion inadvertently added by the Tokyo PA system during its recording.

In her forward to the Jazz Icons Series 3: Rahsaan Roland Kirk live in '63 and '67, Dorthann Kirk praised the DVD for showing her husband's talent "as a complete musician and not just a musical freak who played three horns simultaneously." That said, Kirk may not ever be seen as a jazz musician. He was no more typical a musician than Art Tatum. Both men, because of their respective loams of talent, could legitimately be considered "freaks" but only in the best sense of that pejorative: Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a singular talent who could make the conventional from the most unconventional.
