Laurent Korcia - Doubles Jeux
EAC+LOG+CUE | FLAC: 276 MB | Full Artwork: 174 MB | 5% Recovery Info
Label/Cat#: Naive # V 5066 | Country/Year: France 2006
Genre: Classical, Jazz | Style: Romantic, Early 20th Century

This recital disc has an unusual title that points the way toward an unusual program. "Doubles jeux" might be translated as "double play" (no baseball music, unfortunately), suggesting not only that this is a program of duets -- for violin with piano, cello, guitar, contrabass, bandoneón, or, on the last two tracks, voice -- but also the fusion of jazz and classical repertory. Violinist Laurent Korcia is not unique in having attempted the latter double play, but he pulls it off here in an unusually varied and delightful way. (...) Like so many of the releases from France's Naïve label, this one is equally successful in reimagining established repertoire and in superbly executing the new concept.

A rare solo performance by one of jazz’s great originals, Canadian pianist Paul Bley, recorded live at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 2008 by Jan Erik Kongshaug and Manfred Eicher. There is nothing else quite like a Paul Bley concert. As the New York Times noted, “Mr. Bley long ago found a way to express his long, elegant, voluminous thoughts in a manner that implies complete autonomy from its given setting but isn't quite free jazz.

Vanguard Records, VDM 79142 | ~ 204 or 206 or 105 Mb | Scans Included
Folk / Singer/Songwriter

This is one of the most scathing topical folk albums ever made. Sainte-Marie sings in an emotional, vibrato-laden voice of war ("The Universal Soldier," later a hit for Donovan), drugs ("Cod'ine"), sex ("The Incest Song"), and most telling, the mistreatment of Native Americans, of which Sainte-Marie is one ("Now That the Buffalo's Gone"). Even decades later, the album's power is moving and disturbing...

Keb' Mo' - BluesAmericana (2014)

Label: Kind of Blue Music | Catalog.#: 7 28028 33040 3 | Genre: Blues

The title is a tip-off that after the soul excursion of The Reflection, Keb' Mo' is getting back to the blues, but also that he's concerned with not limiting himself to just that genre. It's clear Keb' Mo' has a broad view of the blues, seeing it as the backbone of American music, a generous definition he makes plain on BLUESAmericana. As the record rolls through its ten tracks, it amiably drifts across the country, touching upon the careening New Orleans stomp of "Old Me Better" as well as the soulful thrum of Memphis on "For Better or Worse." Keb' Mo' takes plenty of stops along the way...

On July 27, 1986, Queen performed the largest-ever stadium concert at the Népstadion in Budapest in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans. The concert was part of the famed Magic Tour, which was the last time the band toured with lead singer Freddie Mercury. Now, this original concert film has been remastered in high definition and features many of Queen's favorite tracks Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, I Want To Break Free and We Are The Champions. With three years to go before the fall of the Berlin Wall, this was the first Western rock concert performed in a stadium behind the then Iron Curtain. It was of such significance to the Hungarian authorities and film industry that a group of the country's top film cameramen and technicians were brought together to film it for posterity. / Bonus Feature: A Magic Year, a 27 minute feature looking at Queen during this time period.
